FSB welcomes new Competitiveness Commission

23 January 2006

Following an announcement that the Leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, is to set up a Competitiveness Commission under Simon Wolfson, the Chief Executive of Next plc, the National Chairman of the FSB, Carol Undy, has welcomed the initiative and offered the unique expertise and insight that the small business sector can offer on this issue.

The FSB's National Chairman, Carol Undy, said:

"The small business sector is frequently forgotten when discussing competitiveness issues. However, small firms are responsible for over half of GDP, we make up more than half of the private sector workforce, over thirteen million jobs, and our view is vital when considering how to improve the business climate of the UK.

"I am therefore offering the services and views of the FSB to the Conservative Party’s Competitiveness Commission, as we would to such initiatives of other political parties. This is to ensure that our members’ views are taken into account by all points on the political spectrum as the debate on competitiveness and productivity moves forward.”
