FSB Welcome Increase Small Business Research & Development

25th November 2005

The Federation of Small Businesses has welcomed the increase in Small Business expenditure on Research & Development contained in a survey published today by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment which showed an increase of £5.3 million.

Wilfred Mitchell, FSB Policy Chairman said:

“The FSB has consistently encouraged small businesses to use R & D to develop innovative products and to target new markets. More R & D is absolutely vital in expanding our private sector and for the future success of our economy”

“While this survey show’s some increase in R&D we still have a long to go before Northern Irelands spend in this area is relative to the rest of the UK. To do this we need a greater dynamic partnership between Further & Higher Education and our Private sector”

“The FSB have encouraged DETI & Invest Northern Ireland to use more case studies of small businesses who have successfully used Research & Development to expand their business as a more effective way of promoting it to our small business sector”
