FSB warns water companies on drought orders

15 May 2006

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) today warned water companies to act proportionately when implementing drought orders so that small businesses are not disproportionately affected.

The warning follows the approval of a drought order for Sutton & East Surrey Water by Ian Pearson, the Environment Minister. The UK’s biggest business organisation is concerned that the decision could affect the livelihoods of small businesses that rely on water in the area.

The FSB will be writing to the water company to express its concerns and to urge them to consider the legitimate needs of small businesses when implementing the drought order.

John Holbrow, FSB Environment Chairman, said:

“Small businesses will find it very hard to accept restrictions on water usage from water companies, including Sutton & East Surrey Water, that are still losing millions of litres per day in leakages.

“We urge Sutton & East Surrey Water, along with other water companies that may be granted drought orders in the future, to act responsibly.

“In granting this drought order the Environment Minister himself highlighted the need for the impact on small businesses to be minimised. We hope and expect that Sutton & East Surrey Water get the message.”
