FSB publishes advice for firms on smoking ban

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has published advice to help small firms in England with the smoking ban that comes into force on July the first.

Working in partnership with Abbey Legal Protection the FSB has outlined what businesses need to do to protect themselves from the heavy fines that they could face if someone smokes on their business premises.

The advice also aims to highlight the tricky parts of the ban, such as smoking in work vehicles or what the rules are for people who work at home.

Mary Boughton, FSB Health and Safety chairman, said:

“Everyone has known for a long time that July the first is D-day as far as the smoking ban in England is concerned. However, if a small business gets the details wrong it could prove very costly. The fines for an individual are very small but for a business they can run into thousands of pounds.

“There are many different types of business and business premises but the ban will affect them all in some way. It’s important that businesses are organised with only a week to go until the ban comes into effect.

“Thanks to our legal advice partner Abbey Legal small businesses everywhere need not fall foul of the new rules. FSB members can also access legal advice on all other business legislation free as part of their membership package.”
