FSB looks forward to Olympics boost for small firms

24 January 2006

At today’s ‘2012 Olympics Business Summit’ at Canary Wharf the FSB reminded the Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, that small firms should be fully involved in the Olympics as they have a vital role to play in delivering this exciting event for the UK.

The FSB's National Chairman, Carol Undy, said:

"The Olympics in London will be a boost for business across the UK. Procurement contracts for the Games should be as open as possible because competition will ensure the best value for the event. Contracts should therefore be broken down into ‘bite sized’ chunks so that small firms are not disadvantaged when bidding to supply the Games and regeneration projects in East London.

"It is also important that the Government keeps a close eye on the payment times for these contracts. Payment times for Millennium projects were disappointing and this cannot be allowed to happen again for the Olympics.

"The Games are an opportunity for the whole country to put on a show for the world and it is therefore vital that we are all allowed to play our part. Small firms have a lot to contribute to the 2012 Games and we call on the Government to ensure that fair play extends to supplying and building the Games as much as it will to competing in them.”
