FSB calls for help for small business flood victims

26 June 2007

The Federation of Small Business (FSB) has called on the government to assist small businesses that have been affected by severe flooding in England and Wales.

The UK’s biggest business organisation has warned that some small businesses face commercial ruin and called on the Environment Agency not to forget them when they help with the aftermath of the flooding.

The FSB also called on insurance companies to process claims speedily so that affected businesses can get back on their feet as soon as possible.

John Wright, FSB National Chairman, said:

“The wettest June on record is set to have a devastating impact on small businesses in many areas of England and Wales and the extent of the damage may not become clear for some time.

“The FSB will do all it can to assist those of its members that have been affected, including the possibility of interest-free loans to help them recover, as we did after the flooding in 2002.

“But the Environment Agency, and if necessary central government, must play its part in assisting the victims of the flooding and we call on them not to forget the small business community when they do so. Jobs, livelihoods and the future of local communities are at risk.”
