'Findings indicate government will fail to meet child poverty targets'

11 October 2011

“Severe poverty is a prison sentence, condemning children to mental and physical health problems, feelings of hopelessness and long term desperation. The damaging psychological impact is immeasurable.

“The findings from the report indicate that the Government will fail meet its targets set out in the Child Poverty Act. Poverty is far too complex to solve by focusing on income alone. A one-sided attack will simply scratch the surface.

“Family breakdown, mental and physical health issues and unemployment are increasing. In order to help families break free from complex problems and deprivation a multilayered approach including early intervention, education and relevant job opportunities is needed. Investment in this approach will be the true teller of how committed the Government really is to extinguishing child poverty in Britain.”
