Fight against health inequalities must go on

11 June 2010

A new study into the health of the Scottish population shows many people north of the border may be living with one or more risk factors of heart disease, including smoking, not exercising enough and eating a poor diet.

Our senior cardiac nurse Ellen Mason said:

"If the rest of the country's population mirrors this large study then it’s fair to say that people in Scotland are not particularly healthy. They are not alone though as statistics show similar trends south of the border and across the rest of the UK.

"We must make sure we continue to raise awareness of risk factors like smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and poor diet so people can improve their lifestyle and reduce their risk of developing heart and circulatory disease.

"We mustn't give up tackling health inequalities across the UK because people need to know that making small changes can make a big difference to their heart health."

The study was published in the BMC Public Health journal.
