Federation welcomes Labour's review of policing

28 September 2011

Paul McKeever, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, having spoken at today's Labour conference welcomes Yvette Cooper's announcement to conduct a review of policing.

"We welcome the Opposition's commitment to conduct a review of policing and the Criminal Justice System.

"We have been calling for a Royal Commission on policing for over a decade. We are long overdue a review of the way England and Wales is policed. The last review took place in 1962 and a lot has changed since then. The Government must realise that there has never been a better time to undertake a fundamental and holistic review into all aspects of policing.

"Recent knee jerk solutions announced by the Prime Minister and Home Secretary together with the current reviews - Hutton, Winsor and Neyroud are all indicative of a piecemeal, disjointed and reactionary approach to change. An independent review of the police service will show that many of our current structures and practices are out of date and there is room for improvement.

"The current government is hell-bent on ploughing ahead with major cuts in a worryingly disjointed way without pausing and asking the public what they would like from their police service. We look forward to working with the review's independent chair, Lord Stevens, to ensure the voice of rank and file officers is heard and included in his research."
