FAKE FOOTBALL SHIRTS SCAM GIVEN THE BOOT

19/6/06

Dodgy dealers scamming World Cup fans with fake football shirts have been shown the red card by Camden Council’s Trading Standards team.

A number of counterfeit England shirts were seized by council officers carrying out inspections at Camden Town market on Thursday (15 June), whilst the country’s football team was preparing to take on Trinidad and Tobago in Germany.

The shirts, selling at £20 each, were confiscated and the council will be carrying out further spot checks throughout the duration of the tournament to stamp out the illegal trade.

Christopher Jones, Head of Trading Standards at Camden Council said:

“Football fans want to enjoy the game but anyone who buys one of these shirts to cheer on their team would end up on the losing side. The quality of these shirts is more plastic cup than World Cup, and unscrupulous traders should not be able to trick fans out of their hard-earned cash by selling counterfeit kit.”

He advised fans to check carefully when buying football shirts. The Football Association’s official kit supplier, Umbro, manufactures every genuine shirt with a security label and unique number, which is carried in the neck of the garment.

Anyone who suspects counterfeit goods are being sold in the borough can contact Camden Council Trading Standards team on 020 7974 6917/6939.
