EU Data Protection proposals must not increase costs or hamper efforts to reduce fraud

26 January 2012

Insurers take data protection very seriously. It is important that data privacy laws strike the right balance between the rights of individuals with the needs of insurers to deliver services in the interests of their customers. To ensure that they set premiums fairly to reflect the actual risk they need to collect relevant personal details from customers, and will do everything possible to ensure that personal information is handled responsibly and that data protection requirements are fully complied with.

We will analyse the EC proposals and work with the UK Government and MEPs to ensure that any legislation adopted in Brussels is proportionate. There is a risk that the proposals as currently drafted will impose a disproportionate burden on insurers and will negatively impact policy holders.

It is imperative that these proposals do not impact on the ability of insurers to share information to prevent fraud and other financial crime. Efforts to combat fraud which are in the public good should not be hampered by any inflexible data protection regulations.
