ESSEX ROTARY CLUBS RAISE OVER £35,000 FOR ROYAL MARSDEN HOSPITAL

Rotary Clubs in Essex have raised over £35,000 for The Royal Marsden Drug Development Unit. The actress Shirley Anne Field presented a cheque for £35,536.54 on behalf of the clubs to Professor Stan Kaye at the Drug Development Unit of The Royal Marsden Hospital, in Sutton on Friday 11th January 2008.

This money was raised by Rotary clubs throughout Essex in 2006 and 2007. This was achieved with a Postcard campaign whereby the public purchased a postcard for a £1, with just one prize, a new Corsa SXi car. The car was donated by the local Vauxhall main agent, County Motors Ltd, of Chelmsford and the campaign was sponsored by the Meadows Shopping Centre in Chelmsford. The draw was organised by the Rotary Club of Braintree & Bocking and the car was won by Mrs B. Pepper who lives in Bishops Stortford.

The Drug Development Unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital is led by Professor Stan Kaye and staffed jointly by The Institute of Cancer Research Section of Medicine and Cancer Research UK Centre for Cancer Therapeutics. It facilitates the essential ‘bench to bedside’ link between research and patients, which is crucial to successful new drug development in cancer.

Rotary District Governor Brian Piccolo said: "Rotary Clubs throughout Great Britain and Ireland are this year focusing on support for cancer research and cancer care to help raise funds and awareness of the many cancers and hopefully save lives by earlier detection. We are delighted to be able to give this support to The Royal Marsden and take this opportunity of thanking the public in Essex for their generosity."
