'Educational achievement secured despite the coalition's education policies' says the NASUWT

16 December 2011

Commenting on the publication of the Department for Education's primary school data for England, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

"It is extremely encouraging to see further improvement in the number of pupils attaining Level 4 in Maths and English.

"In 1995, less than half of pupils reached the required level or above in Maths and English by the end of primary school, but now it is 80% and above.

"Such progress can hardly be described as 'years of chronic under-performance' despite the assertions of Minister Nick Gibb.

"Teachers are continuing year on year to deliver significant progress in the educational achievements of primary school pupils.

"These achievements are being secured in the context of savage cuts to local authority budgets removing vital specialist support for schools, real terms cuts to school funding and relentless attacks on the teaching profession.

"Progress is being made despite the Coalition Government's education policies not because of them."
