East Yorkshire BAE workers head to Westminster on December 14 to plead with MPs for a future

9 December 2011

MPs to be warned that the UK's defence industry risks losing the critical mass it needs to maintain its reputation as a world leader in defence manufacturing

Over 100 workers, members of GMB and Unite, from the BAe Brough plant in East Yorkshire will travel to Parliament in Westminster with their families to fight for their jobs on Wednesday 14 December. They will be lobbying MPs to seek their help to reverse the decision, announced in September, to close BAe's Brough site with the loss of 899 skilled jobs.

The details of the joint lobby of Parliament and rally as follows:

BAE Systems - Save Manufacturing Jobs in the Defence Industry

Wednesday, 14thDecember, 12pm – 4pm

George Norris Room,

Central Methodist Hall,

Westminster, SW1H 9NH

Supported by GMB and Unite the workers will press the case that far from slashing these jobs, they are vital to the future of UK manufacturing.

A delegation of BAe workers will also hand in a petition to David Cameron at number 10 – the petition is in the form of photographs of the individuals who will lose their jobs at Brough and calls on the government to do all in their power to save the site.

The Hawk aircraft is produced at the Brough site and is famously used by the Royal Air Force's (RAF) aerobatic team, the Red Arrows.

Dave Oglesby, GMB Regional officer speaking ahead of the lobby, said: “These jobs may not be in the headlines any more but the fight to save them goes on.

The government cannot sit on its hands and allow these highly skilled jobs to disappear.

The UK's defence industry risks losing the critical mass it needs to maintain its reputation as a world leader in defence manufacturing.

The workers and their families are coming to Westminster to warn MPs that there is too much at stake to let Brough close.”
