DON’T LOSE YOUR VOTE THIS MAY

Camden Council is holding a final push to ensure residents don’t miss out on their chance to vote in the local elections on Thursday 4 May 2006.

With the Monday 13 March deadline to return registration forms coming up, the council is running its first ever Registration Week from Saturday 18 February to Saturday 25 February. This campaign aims to get over 5,000 Camden residents to add or update their details on the Electoral Register. If you do not return your form before the 13 March you could lose your vote in the upcoming local election.

During the week teams of council officers will be at public places across Camden - from tube stations to supermarkets and housing offices to school yards - to get as many people to sign up as possible. A special registration bus will also tour the borough and all visitors to the Town Hall and other council offices will be reminded to register.

Moira Gibb, Camden Council’s Chief Executive, said: “Your vote is the best way you have as a Camden resident to have your say on how things are run in the borough. Anything from when we collect your rubbish to how we tackle antisocial behaviour can all be affected by your vote - don’t lose it, register before Monday 13 March.

“Through Registration Week we are going out to people across the borough to remind them about the need to register. It’s not just about voting, the Electoral Register is also used by many agencies as proof of address. Not being on it can make it harder to get things like bank accounts and parking permits.”

The campaign follows on from the “have your say” campaign, which saw over 84 per cent of the borough returning their registration forms. During Registration Week staff will focus on areas where there have been a low number of people who returned their registration form, such as Belsize, Kilburn and West Hampstead wards.

Anyone who has not yet registered has until Monday March 13 to complete and return an electoral registration form to ensure they get a vote in the local elections.
