'Digital literacy is as important as traditional literacy and numeracy' says the NASUWT

11 January 2010

Commenting on the announcements at the Learning and Technology World Forum made by the Prime Minister and Ed Balls, secretary of state for children schools and families, on the Home Access programme to support learning, Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said;

"This is another example of the very welcome continuing commitment to invest in education.

"Technology in schools has enhanced the learning experience for many children and young people.

"There is compelling evidence that access to technology in the school and in the home improves educational participation and outcomes.

"Digital literacy is as important in the 21st Century is as important as previous work to ensure traditional literacy and numeracy skills in the latter part of the 20th Century.

"Targeting the provision of access to technology to low income families is an essential part of the process of narrowing the gap in terms of access to education. It is also a critical part of the strategy for tackling social and educational exclusion."
