Dalai Lama accepts Legatum Institute invitation for joint work on ethics and public policy

3 February 2012

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has accepted the Legatum Institute's invitation for a joint project on ethics and public policy. Through a series of multi-disciplinary conferences and papers, the project will explore policy options that support and advance healthy, free and prosperous societies.

Foundations for the project were laid during a recent meeting between Legatum Institute President and CEO Jeffrey Gedmin and His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Delhi, India. The "Ethics and Public Policy" project will draw on insights from the Dalai Lama's most recent book, "Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World," which argues for the need to further develop moral ethics and inner values. "Ethics and Public Policy" will also tap into the work of the Legatum Institute's annual Prosperity Index, a comprehensive global assessment of national wealth and quality of life.

"We think it is essential to examine the key values that lie at the foundation of prosperity, broadly defined" said Jeffrey Gedmin, President and CEO of the Legatum Institute. "We are honoured that His Holiness the Dalai Lama will join us for this important discussion."

The first meeting of the new project will be held in London in October 2012.
