CWU supports anti-EDL march this Saturday

1 September 2011

CWU leaders are backing a demonstration this Saturday (3 September) against the English Defence League's planned march through Tower Hamlets and urging members to turn out for the event to send a strong message that racism and fascism will not be tolerated.

Organised by Unite Against Fascism (UAF), the counter-demonstration is expected to be the biggest this year and hopes to show that the vast majority of people don't want the racists and fascists of the EDL in Tower Hamlets or anywhere else. The EDL has been banned from marching through Tower Hamlets but is still going ahead with a static demonstration.

Speaking at a UAF/United East End meeting hosted by Tower Hamlets trade unions on the evening of the 30th August Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary said: "I'm proud of our union's association with UAF and we are sponsoring the event on 3 September. We need everyone out on Saturday, as many people as we can. We'll be out in great numbers and we'll push back the EDL on Saturday."

CWU's senior deputy general secretary Tony Kearns added: "Despite the ban on the EDL march announced by Theresa May, the EDL racists have made it clear that they will be in Tower Hamlets on Saturday, the only reason for this is to attempt to spread fear and intimidation throughout the community.

"These are the same streets that our members live and work on and so it is central to the work of the CWU that we show our anti-racist credentials by supporting and attending this demonstration against the EDL."

The national demonstration against the English Defence League on 3 September will assemble in Whitechapel, very close to the East London Mosque.
