CSK Alliance brief ministers on vital voluntary sector work to tackle gangs

Fourteen CSJ Alliance members, including Chance UK, who are working with gangs met yesterday with the Home Secretary and the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions at the Centre for Social Justice.

The meeting was set up to provide a frontline perspective on the drivers of gang affiliation, and the solutions that are already been successfully implemented at a local level by voluntary sector organisations around the UK. There was consensus among the CSJ Alliance members on the primary reasons young people join gangs, notably the need for security and a sense of belonging. Also cited were the lack of moral framework in society, and the absence of fathers and positive male role models in the lives of the majority of those involved in gang activity.
