Crème de la crème of UK management recognised at national awards ceremony

21 October 2011

The achievements and expertise of the UK's best managers and management teams were celebrated at a prestigious awards ceremony in central London last night, where winners included Birmingham City Council, ShredBank and Tube Lines.

A total of 12 CMI Management and Leadership Awards were presented by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in categories including Outstanding Leader, Young Achiever and Social Responsibility Management. The Awards judge organisations, teams and individual managers by looking at issues including financial success, governance, people management, communications, ethics, sustainability and learning. The winners were chosen from a shortlist of 41 finalists from all sectors, nations and regions of the UK.

Scooping the Outstanding Leader award was Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of the trade association representing the video games industry, TIGA. At a time when TIGA was being threatened by its main competitor, Richard managed to turn the organisation's fortunes around, increasing its membership by 47% in a year, its turnover by 62% and its profitability by 8%.

Under Richard's leadership, TIGA has started to address the major challenges facing the UK video games industry including an unfavourable tax regime, political irrelevance and skills shortages. He has worked with the Coalition Government to secure tax credits for members undertaking research and development, ensured the industry is now seen as a serious economic player by providing thought leadership, and increased the supply of skilled people available to work in the sector through training initiatives. Richard is also credited with TIGA achieving Investors in People status and with introducing 34 innovations in processes, products and markets.

Speaking at the ceremony, Richard said: "I'm exceptionally proud of my team and what we've achieved at TIGA. It's been a challenging but exciting time for us and everyone has worked incredibly hard to get the organisation into the position of strength and influence that it is in now. It's a huge honour to have my role recognised but especially for TIGA to be named Outstanding Organisation. We're committed to training and developing the skills of our staff, especially when it comes to management and leadership, which is why winning two CMI Management and Leadership Awards is such a wonderful achievement. Organisations cannot grow and succeed without high quality managers and leaders at their helms."

Tube Lines, the organisation responsible for the maintenance, renewal and upgrade of the London Underground infrastructure, won the Social Responsibility Management gong in recognition of the entrepreneurial and ambitious approach it has taken to prioritising environmental management. Achievements include: reducing waste to landfill by 95%; a 10.4% reduction in its carbon footprint; exceeding the Government's landfill directives targets five years ahead of the deadline; and exceeding the Mayor of London's landfill targets 20 years ahead of the deadline.

All front line staff undergo environmental management training and recognition schemes have been implemented to reward and encourage positive environmental behaviour. Tube Lines has also prioritised working with the local community, for example by supplying excess woodchips for use as a safety surface under adventure playground equipment. The organisation's commitment to training and development was also acknowledged at the ceremony, with Tube Lines receiving the award for Training and Development Management.

CMI's President, Terry Morgan, said: "While stress and strain appears in the UK economy, it is great to see that there are managers and leaders who are excelling just when they are most needed. More emphasis and value needs to be placed on the importance of strong management at times like this and these winners are excellent examples of what organisations can achieve when the quality and integrity of managers and leaders is improved. Last night's winners have set incredibly high standards of management and leadership excellence and I hope other organisations follow their lead. Without strong management and leadership UK plc will struggle to get back on its feet, meaning organisations need to act now."
