CPRE Welcomes Euro Landscape Treaty

21 November 2006

The Campaign to Protect Rural England [1] warmly welcomes today’s (Tuesday) announcement that the UK has ratified the European Landscape Convention [2]. The UK is now one of 27 European countries to have ratified this international treaty.

The Convention aims to promote landscape protection, management and planning. It encourages public authorities to adopt policies and measures at local, regional and national level that will work in harmony with the landscape. [3]

Whether this landscape is within one of our beautiful National Parks, the village green or open fields, the ELC seeks protection of the landscapes that add to the character and beauty of an area.

CPRE Chief Executive Shaun Spiers said: ‘This important treaty recognises that conserving our varied and beautiful rural landscapes matters to us all. We look to the Government to come up with the policies, in land use planning and elsewhere, to ensure the Convention amounts to deeds as well as words.
