Councils respond to winter resilience audit
21 December 2010
Responding to David Quarmby's audit of how the country coped with the cold snap at the end of November, Cllr Peter Box, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Economy and Transport Board, said:
“This report makes clear that the thorough preparation made by councils over the past year left them well equipped to ease some of the inevitable disruption caused by the cold snap we saw at the end of November.
“It also shows that councils have more salt in stock than last year.
“The snow has now returned and the pressure on salt supplies has increased as we tackle one of the most severe winters in living memory.
“Public safety is the top priority for councils and the thousands of gritting staff who are working around the clock in sub-zero temperatures to treat roads and paths.
“We know that councils are using salt carefully and many have already implemented recommendations from the Government-commissioned review on winter resilience which was published only a few weeks before the cold weather hit.
“Where there is room for improvement, we would join Mr Quarmby in urging Government to share technical evidence with councils on how to make salt go further.”
