Councils: Olympic torch relay will give everyone a chance to get involved

7 November 2011

Responding to LOCOG's announcement on the Olympic Torch route, Cllr Chris White, Chair of the LGA's Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said:

“Councils have a key role in making the 2012 Games a success and we've been working closely with the organisers on how we can engage as many people as possible. It's therefore a great start that the Olympic Flame will be processing through the vast majority of local authority areas, giving everyone a chance to get involved.

“It'll be no small task for councils to help make this happen. Council staff will be liaising with community groups, schools, sports clubs, businesses and the emergency services, sorting traffic management, arranging torch-linked events and cleaning up after the crowds return home. But it's work we're happy to do to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“The Local Leaders Initiative is a great way to get people involved and councils will be ready to help them celebrate in any way they can. Earlier this year councils across the country pulled out all the stops to make organising royal wedding street parties as easy as possible and we'll be doing the same with the 2012 Games. Bringing communities together can only be a good thing and it's something councils see as one of their key roles."
