Council tax freeze and efficiency programme announced

19 July 2006

Camden Council’s share of next year’s council tax (2007/8) will be frozen as part of a budget plan that also proposes making real efficiency savings across the council's business.

The proposals are contained in the council’s medium term financial forecast which is set to be agreed by the Executive meeting next week (26-7-06).

Under the plan senior council officers will be asked to identify how an initial budget gap of £18 million can be closed through a rigorous efficiency and cost control programme. The process of identifying where the budget gap can be closed happens routinely at this time every year.

Executive member for resources, Cllr Janet Grauberg, said: “Residents tell us that council tax is too high in Camden and we know there is scope for greater efficiency.

“Council tax has risen year on year which has put a heavy burden on pensioners and people on fixed incomes. We have pledged to freeze the part of the council tax which Camden controls because we don't think residents should pay a penny more than they have to.

“In addition, we know that the government is likely to be giving less money to councils in the future so we need to be sure we are as efficient as possible. The council is already finding ways of being more efficient - such as using new technology and eliminating duplication and waste.”

Cllr Grauberg added: “I’m confident that by listening to what people want, with creativity, innovation and a thorough efficiency programme, we can make the savings we need to make every pound of public money go further.”
