COUNCIL AGREES MODERNISATION FOR KENTISH TOWN SPORTS CENTRE

23 February 2006

Camden Council has agreed to refurbish and modernise Kentish Town Sports Centre (KTSC), at an estimated cost of £14m.

The council’s Executive Committee agreed last night, Wednesday 22 February, on a package that would keep the two main pools at the Prince Of Wales Road building and guarantee that the centre could continue to operate for at least 20 years more.

The move will involve essential repairs, plant modernisation and refurbishment of the two big pools along with improved fitness provision at either KTSC or the nearby Talacre Community Sports Centre.

Camden Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Councillor Phil Turner, said: “Camden Council is investing significantly in excellent leisure facilities for the borough, and Kentish Town Sports Centre is the final centre which needs investment and improvement.

“The council has been looking at all the options for providing much-improved swimming and fitness facilities in the area and this is the best choice. We have never at any point agreed to close KTSC.

“This option balances the need to spend money well with what people want. It will guarantee the future of the big pools, ensure the centre is of a high standard for users to enjoy and enable us to improve health and fitness provision significantly.

“The council is absolutely committed to this plan. We will consult widely with the community to ensure that everyone has the chance to have a say on the project.”

The planned improvements include:

  • Refurbishment of the two main pools. One pool would be fitted with a moveable floor to allow use as a learner pool.
  • Upgrading of the foyer and reception area and the construction of new changing facilities.
  • The infilling of the existing small teaching pool for new mechanical, electrical and filtration plant rooms, along with essential repairs to the rest of the building.
  • A decision to be made later on whether to provide new fitness facilities at KTSC or at Talacre.

Another report will be submitted to the Executive next month proposing agreement to the allocation of funds for the project. Extensive consultation on various elements of the scheme, such as how to improve the foyer and where the improved fitness provision should be, will begin later this year.
