Consumer mistrust and lack of government standards are main barriers facing green agenda

Kevin Brennan, Head of Sustainability, VELUX Company Ltd, responds to the latest research by the Energy Saving Trust and the launch of its 'Building in the Dark' campaign:

"The research conducted by the Energy Saving Trust highlights a clear gap in consumer confidence and industry knowledge. There is a growing awareness among consumers about the need to 'be green' but it has become increasingly apparent that the majority do not know who to trust when seeking professional advice about relevant eco technologies and their installation.

"The main barrier we face is not consumer apathy or resistance, it is a lack of information and quality standards. If a home is undergoing renovation, this is the perfect time to install relevant eco technologies but we are missing a huge opportunity if consumers are refraining from installing such measures simply due to a lack of trust in the advice and knowledge of their trades people in this area.

"We would fully support an accredited scheme, which is well vetted and ultimately does not create a bottle neck for the uptake of renewable technologies. We urgently need the Government to take action and in association with key stake holders, clearly define a set of objectives and outcomes which can then be rolled out to the vast number of existing technical training colleges around the UK. This would allow us to engage consumers and drive up the essential uptake of vital technologies such as solar thermal in a professional and consistent manor."
