Coalition shows commitment to protecting landscapes but might lose strategic oversight

The Conservative and Liberal Democrats have today published their coalition agreement for government. Campaign to Protect Rural England director of policy Neil Sinden responded:

"We are pleased to see a strong emphasis on planning reform, protection of the Green Belt and other green spaces, and action to promote wildlife habitats. It is vital that changes to the planning system improve its ability to secure environmental objectives while accommodating necessary development.

"However, Ministers must not forget that while increasing local decision-making powers is needed, a strategic approach which extends beyond the level of the neighbourhood or parish is also vital to ensure we can protect and enhance valued landscapes and Green Belt areas, and promote effective urban regeneration."
