Press Release
'Coalition government is squandering the positive legacy of sustained improvement' says the NASUWT
14 December 2010
Commenting on the publication of the DfE primary school data, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers union, said:
"Over the last 15 years there has been significant progress in the educational achievements of primary school pupils.
“In 1995, only 49% of pupils reached Level 4 or above in English by the end of primary school, but by 2009, this had risen to 80%.
“In Maths 79% of pupils left primary school having met the expected standard as opposed to 45% in 1995.
"The Coalition Government is, however, not surprisingly seeking to downplay these significant gains in order to support its own ideological agenda.
“The introduction of yet another arbitrary target will do nothing to support schools in building on the successes of the recent past.
"The Coalition Government's failure to acknowledge the hard work and achievements of teachers, its real terms cuts to per pupil funding, its decimation of local authorities and its attempts to foster competition rather than collaboration between schools, threaten only to squander the positive legacy of sustained improvement it has inherited."
