Coalition blamed for the nearly 700 job losses earmarked for Sheffield City Council

The blame for nearly 700 potential job losses at Sheffield City Council was firmly placed on the 'continuing and failing policies' of the coalition, Unite, the largest union in the country, said today (Friday, 11 November).

The council has announced that 690 potential job losses could be implemented between next May and March 2013, out of a workforce of just over 7,000.

Unite regional officer, Doug Patterson called on the Labour-controlled council 'to leave no stone unturned' in avoiding the need for redundancies when the council meets to finalise its budget in February and March.

Doug Patterson said: 'The council is facing a £50 million cut to its budget from Whitehall in the next financial year 2012/13, following on from an £80 million reduction in the current financial year. These job losses could be avoided if the government reversed its continuing and failing polices on public expenditure – and adopted a U-turn in its current harsh policies to local government.'

'At present, we don't know what the impact on services will be, or how many job vacancies the council presently has. Unite would urge councillors to leave no stone unturned in avoiding job losses and cuts to much-needed local services.'

The job losses cut across the council's manual, clerical, management and professional, and technical staffs.

Doug Patterson added: 'Unfortunately, Sheffield won't be the only council in Yorkshire and England to face these very difficult financial decisions because of the coalition's ideological dislike of local government.'
