Charity welcomes government commitment to tackle sight loss

24 January 2012

The Government has announced it will be making sight loss a public health priority.

The Macular Disease Society which provides information and support for more than half a million people in the UK with central vision loss welcomed this action.

Age related macular degeneration is one form of sight loss which is being tracked by the eye health indicator included in the Public Health Outcomes Framework.

Macular Disease Society CEO, Helen Jackman, said: “Eye health has had too low a profile for many years. This is a very welcome move on the part of the Government. As our population ages many more people are at risk of age-related macular degeneration and it is vital that health and care organisations plan for the future. The health indicator gives them a helpful tool to do this.”

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the central vision and is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK. This is just one form of macular disease, there many other types including juvenile macular dystrophies.
