CHALCOTS ESTATE IMPROVEMENTS PLAN ENTERS HOME STRAIGHT

15 December 2005

Camden Council’s Executive last night formally endorsed the multi-million pound scheme to renovate the Chalcots Estate in Swiss Cottage.

This major project will transform the five tower blocks on the Chalcots estate with the help of an injection of £65 million from central Government. To ensure the scheme can start as soon as possible, councillors gave the go-ahead for preparatory work to start on the estate in January 2006. This will include work to finalise the designs and recruiting staff ahead of the final agreement being reached. The council is set to sign a contract with Partners For Improvement in Camden (PFIC) before the end of March.

Cllr Julian Fulbrook, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Housing said: "We have entered the home straight on this much needed project. Residents of Chalcots Estate will see the major repairs and improvements they deserve. Over the next few months we will be working hard to get the detail of the contract right.”

Camden Leader Cllr Raj Chada announced the revised scheme in November after the council secured the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s (ODPM) backing. It followed an earlier decision by the Treasury to pull the plug on the original PFI scheme in February this year despite approval from the ODPM at the time.
