CHALCOTS ESTATE IMPROVEMENTS DEAL COMPLETED

2 May 2006

Camden Council and Partners for Improvement in Camden Limited (PFIC) today (Monday 2 May 2006) completed the deal for the multi-million pound Private Finance Initiative scheme to renovate the Chalcots Estate in Swiss Cottage.

The fifteen-year project will transform the five tower blocks on the Chalcots estate with the help of an injection of £65 million from central Government. Preparations are already well advanced and the contract signed today means that work to improve the blocks will begin in May.

Neil Litherland, Camden Council’s Director of Housing and Adult Social Care, said: "This much needed project will see the residents of Chalcots Estate get the major repairs and improvements they deserve. The buildings will get a complete maker-over, with new roofs, windows and external cladding. All tenants will get new bathrooms and kitchens too.”

The renovation scheme was announced in November after the council secured the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s (ODPM) backing. It is a revised version of the PFI scheme that was rejected by the Treasury in February this year despite approval from the ODPM at the time.

The revised PFI scheme will see the renovation of all the blocks on the estate. This will include:

  • New bathrooms and kitchens for all tenants
  • Works to the roofs
  • New cladding to the blocks to protect it from the elements and improve the look of the estate
  • New double glazed windows
  • New lifts (although these will now be funded directly by the council)
  • A 15-year maintenance contract for repairs excluding water and gas supplies with the private contractor.
