CAMDEN’S CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT DIRECTOR GETS TOP LONDON DESIGN JOB

27 September 2006

Peter Bishop, Director of Culture and Environment at Camden Council has been appointed the first Director of Design for London.

Design for London is a new organisation set up by the Mayor to be a focus for design leadership for London government. It will bring together existing design teams in the Greater London Authority (GLA), London Development Agency (LDA) and Transport for London and promote London as a sustainable world city.

Mr Bishop has worked for Camden for five and a half years and during this time made an enormous contribution to the council, not least his skilful handling of some large scale projects such as the £2 billion King's Cross development.

Moira Gibb, Chief Executive, Camden Council said:

“I shall personally miss Peter’s considerable contribution to the corporate management team, the quality of his strategic thinking and his great vision for our borough. I am sure the experience he gained at Camden placed him well to get his new job.”

Peter Bishop, Director of Culture and Environment, Camden Council said:

“The five and a half years that I have spent in Camden has, without a doubt, been the most enjoyable in my career to date, and I look forward to maintaining close links in my new job. My new role is very exciting. It is a real opportunity to help shape the city over the next few years, making it a better place for Londoners to live, work and move around in.”

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said:

“Peter’s incredible leadership and vision has made the borough a better place to live, work and visit. I am looking forward to building on this legacy in the future. I am disappointed for Camden that he is leaving but delighted for him personally.”

Mr Bishop will leave Camden at the end of December 2006 and work will start immediately to find his replacement.
