CAMDEN’S BEST BAR NONE WINNERS 2006 ANNOUNCED

5 June 2006

The White Hart (Drury Lane, Covent Garden, WC2) in the bars category and The Newton Arms (Newton Street, London, WC2) in the pubs category won the prestigious award, which aims to help cut alcohol-related crime and disorder. It recognises landlords that run their premises professionally and safely. Best Bar None is a national independent accreditation scheme, and has been piloted in the London Borough of Camden in Camden Town and Seven Dials (Covent Garden). These areas have the highest concentration of pubs, bars and restaurants. If the pilot proves to be successful, it could be rolled out borough-wide next year. The awards ceremony was held at the Renaissance Chancery Court Hotel, Holborn, London WC1

Camden Council has set the scheme up in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade, and is working closely with local licensed businesses. Successful venues will be able to show their clientele that they are serious about customer care and that they are concerned about the safety of drinkers and the neighbouring community. Plus they can promote the fact that they run their business to high standards and set a good example for less well-run establishments.

Cllr Ben Rawlings, Executive Member for Community Safety, Camden Council said:

“Well-run pubs and bars are often at the heart of local communities, and can help prevent crime. The pubs and bars in Camden taking part in Best Bar None are leading the way in setting the standards for responsible management and we hope that others will join in future years.

He added:

“Best Bar None will help deter alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour and play a role in making Camden a safer place to live, work and socialise. We need to address the problems of alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour with enforcement, but we also need to celebrate and promote the majority of premises that are doing well.”

Mike Wroe, Business Development Director, British Institute of Innkeeping said:

"As the professional body for the sector, with more than 17,500 members nationally, we support this excellent scheme, which has been successfully piloted in Camden. It gives pubs and clubs the ability to achieve the recognition they so deserve. If you are successful in achieving the Best Bar None award it could give you business benefits and customer recognition, and the scheme commends the attention to detail of running a professional and successful establishment."
