CAMDEN STREETS RATED AMONGST CLEANEST IN LONDON

26/6/06

Camden’s streets are amongst the cleanest in London, according to a recent survey by an independent environmental charity.

The results1 released this month by Encams (formerly the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign) show that the London Borough of Camden ranks third out of 28 London local authorities, maintaining its excellent record for clean streets.

Street cleaning is one of the council’s most highly rated services, with nearly three quarters of residents expressing high levels of satisfaction2. The Encams survey also shows that the council is winning the battle against graffiti, whilst fly posting has almost been eradicated entirely.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council, said:

“Having clean streets and getting rid of problems such as litter, graffiti and dog fouling is very important to residents. We need to make sure we focus our efforts on improving the state of our streets and the quality of life for local people. This will include taking enforcement action where necessary against the minority of people who damage the local environment. Tackling these problems will help us make the borough cleaner, safer and more attractive.”

Camden Council’s Street Environment services team, and its contractor Veolia Environment, clean approximately 125 miles of streets, seven days a week. Recent measures to keep the streets clean and the local environment attractive have included:

· Encouraging smokers to bin their butts, giving out more than 500 pouches for disposing of cigarette ends during a campaign including work with Great Ormond Street and Royal Free hospitals, in February 2006

· Taking part in the London Clean Up, a weeklong, capital-wide effort targeting environmental anti-social behaviour, in March 2006. Officers seized counterfeit goods, illegal hot dog stands, and an unregistered waste carrier, and worked with local community groups on litter picking.

  • Extending sweeping hours in busy Camden Town and Seven Dials until 3am, Wednesday to Sunday
  • Continuing the Cleaner Estates programme in which street cleaners also operate on housing estates in Gospel Oak

Future events to clean up dumped rubbish and graffiti ‘grotspots’ are planned during the coming year, to improve the local environment for people who live, work in and visit the borough.
