CAMDEN SCORES TOP MARKS IN LONDON FOR RECYCLING

24 January 2006

The London Borough of Camden has achieved the highest recycling rate, not including composting, of all London boroughs during 2004/05, according to new figures released on 23 January, by DEFRA (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

The figures which detail recycling and composting rates for every local authority in the country place Camden in first place amongst all London boroughs with 21.18 per cent of all its waste being recycled. When composting rates are included, Camden holds the best total recycling rate of all inner London boroughs with 25.21 per cent, a result faring well above those of neighbouring boroughs.

The data shows that in 2004/05, householders in Camden recycled even higher levels of household waste such as paper, glass, cans and garden waste. *Recycling and composting was up by 6.11 per cent to 25.21 per cent, exceeding the overall London average of 17.7 per cent for the fifth year in a row and meeting Camden’s target of 25 per cent.

Cllr John Thane, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said, “We can all be proud of our progress to date. Camden Council has been expanding and improving its recycling services during the last year to make it easier for local people to recycle and has received fantastic support from the community. From March 2006 Camden Council will be extending its recycling household collection scheme to include plastic bottles and cardboard, something which will make it even easier for residents to recycle. With ‘green events’ such as the Give & Take recycling day held on 21 January and the annual Green Fair in Regent’s Park on 4 June, Camden Council will continue to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling.”

The surge in recycling is also apparent from this year’s impressive Christmas tree recycling results, released today, 24 January. Over 9,765 trees were sent for recycling and composting by Camden residents in the beginning of 2006 up from 6300 trees last year. The resulting compost will be available for residents to buy from Regis Road Recycling Centre, Kentish Town, at the price of £2 for a 40 litre bag.
