CAMDEN RECYCLING DAY SUCCESS

23 January 2006

A colourful doll house, vintage suitcases, clocks, comic books and even an antique sewing machine were some of the used items on offer at Camden Council’s Give and Take Recycling Day at Haverstock School, Chalk Farm on Saturday, 21 January. The event was the first of its kind to take place in Camden and was organised to promote the three R’s - reduce, reuse and recycle.

Scores of people came manned with suitcases full of items that by the end of the event, had found new, happy owners. A lucky visitor walked away with the most valuable item of the day, a hand-workable antique Singer sewing machine. While hundreds of goods swapped hands, children enjoyed bag painting and stalls offered practical advice to visitors on composting and a subsidised reusable nappy scheme for Camden residents.

Dimitra Rappou, Recycling Advisors Co-ordinator, Camden Council said, “We are very pleased with the response to Camden’s first Give and Take Day. We received positive feedback from visitors asking us when we were organising the next Give and Take Day. There is clearly a demand for this type of recycling event. Given the opportunity, people prefer to give their perfectly reusable items a second life and an event like is a chance for everyone to find new toys and household items.”

The Give and Take Day forms part of Camden Council's Climate Change Action plan, promoting local action to reduce the serious impacts of global warming through waste limitation.
