CAMDEN PUPIL ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO RECYCLE MORE

19 September 2006

A pupil from Gospel Oak primary school has featured in a Camden Council poster campaign to encourage more people in the borough to recycle their waste.

Ashkir Gelle, aged 10, was photographed collecting plastic bottles which can be recycled in door to door green boxes or bags, or at on-street recycling sites that the council provides across the borough.

Camden Council introduced a doorstep recycling service for plastic bottles and cardboard in March 2006. Since then, the amount of dry waste recycled from the kerb side collection has risen by 20 per cent on the previous year1.

Ashkir Gelle said:

“I like the poster, it’s really good. I’ve seen it at the bus stop in Queen’s Crescent near my school and it’s funny that it’s me. I’m trying to recycle bottles and things like paper when I can.”

Lisa Sweeney, Deputy Head of Gospel Oak Primary School said:

“We’re very proud of Ashkir, and when he saw the poster he was speechless - he smiled as much as he was doing in it for about half an hour! We do a lot at Gospel Oak Primary to encourage the children to recycle, collecting paper and cardboard from the classrooms, asking parents to donate their old mobile phones and ink cartridges, and composting all our fruit waste from playtimes. We’re really pleased that one of our pupils was chosen to be in the poster campaign.”

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said:

“I’d like to thank Ashkir for helping us remind everyone how important it is to recycle their rubbish. We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste so we can all do more to help improve our local environment. ”
