CAMDEN - NO GO AREA FOR VEHICLE CRIMINALS

24/08/07

Thieves will have nowhere to hide during a two-month joint operation between Camden Council and the police to catch vehicle crime offenders.

VehicleSafe, a partnership operation, aims to reduce vehicle crime in the borough by targeting known hotspots to catch thieves in the act. Residents and visitors to Camden will be given vehicle safety information to help prevent them from becoming a victim of vehicle crime.

Top tips include removing valuables such as laptops and wallets from the vehicle, and cleaning off the sticky residue left by satellite navigation kits to prevent prying eyes detecting the valuable piece of equipment. Owners should make sure all windows including sunroofs are firmly shut.

Other handy hints include trying to park in a well-lit area and using extra safety precautions, such as steering locks or immobilisers to drastically reduce your chances of having your vehicle stolen.

Actions taking place during the operation, which starts next month and runs until the end of October, will include:

Undercover operations to find people who are using stolen blue badges.
Using a mobile CCTV van and decoy cars in vehicle crime hot spots to catch potential thieves. Details of vehicles that are making themselves a target to thieves will also be gathered and the owners written too.
Vehicle crime prevention tips will be sent to residents in hot spot areas and given out at public venues
Visits will also be made by police and Safer Neighbourhoods officers to past victims of vehicle crime to ensure they are not leaving themselves open to repeat attacks.

People who make false claims about being a victim of vehicle crime will also be targeted.

Cllr Ben Rawlings, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Community Safety, said:

“The council and police work all year round to catch vehicle crime offenders as well as giving out important advice and information to people on how to keep their vehicles safe. This focused two-month operation hopes to hit home the message even more strongly that Camden is a no go area for vehicle thieves.”
