CAMDEN LICENSEES TRAIN TO BECOME BEST BAR NONE

05/05/2006

Reducing alcohol-related crime and disorder in Camden was on the menu last week as bar staff took part in a training course on the safe and professional management of licensed premises.

The training course was offered to Camden licensees in support of Camden’s Best Bar None Awards scheme, set up by Camden Council, the Metropolitan Police and the Fire Brigade earlier this year to reduce alcohol-related crime and disorder in partnership with licensed businesses. It was held at Jongleurs bar in Camden Town on 26 April 2006.

The Best Bar None scheme recognizes landlords who run their bar or pub responsibly and also aims to show residents how landlords and local authorities are working together to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder in their area.

Staff from various bars in Camden Town were tested on drinking policies and crime prevention measures. The successful participants were rewarded with a nationally recognized BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing. The training course is available throughout the UK from BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector.

Robert Scourfield, Assistant Director for Environment, Camden Council, said:

“The Best Bar None scheme is a further step towards cutting alcohol-related crime and disorder in Camden and takes a positive approach to community safety by recognising landlords who run their licensed premises responsibly. The training of licensed trade staff is key to the success of the scheme and it is important to understand the contribution staff make to well-run establishments and to ensure that everyone is working to shared guidelines within the licensed trade industry. Camden Council has found that working with licensees and giving them guidance and support when they need it is the most effective way of making sure they stay within the law.”

Mike Wroe, BII Client Development Director said,

“The Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing equips staff with the skills and knowledge to contribute to safely and professionally run licensed premises and is also a reminder of the responsibilities that go along with selling alcohol. Staff training is essential to the success of the Best Bar None scheme and an important recognition of the work being carried out by bar staff to ensure the safety of customers. I am very pleased that Camden Council has taken on board the Best Bar None initiative.”
