CAMDEN IS GOING SMOKEFREE

30 March 2007

With three months until smokefree legislation kicks in, Camden Council and Camden Primary Care Trust have already helped hundreds of organisations plan their switch to a smokefree workplace.

Camden’s workplaces – including pubs and clubs – and enclosed public places all need to be smokefree by Sunday 1 July when the Health Act (2006) comes into effect. Almost a hundred workplaces in the borough have already gone smokefree and Camden Council will be joining them on Friday 1 June. From this day, employees and customers will no longer be able to smoke on council sites – including indoor areas, and outdoor areas such as doorways, balconies and gardens.

Camden Council Leader, Cllr Keith Moffitt, said:

“We are providing free advice to businesses and other organisations on how to go smokefree. Camden Primary Care Trust is also offering free support for residents and people working in Camden who wish to quit smoking.”

From Sunday 1 July it will be illegal to smoke in workplaces and enclosed public places in England. Buildings will be required to display signs outside all entrances stating “No smoking – it is against the law to smoke in these premises.”

Experience from other areas where a smoking ban has been introduced suggests that it becomes largely self-policing, and the council will be fair and proportionate in the way it enforces it. The council will be agreeing the details of how to do this at a meeting on 25 April 2007.
