CAMDEN COUNCIL WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR TACKLING FLYPOSTING

3 March 2006

Camden Council’s success in tackling illegal flyposting was recognised earlier this week (28 February) when it won a prestigious national award.

The prize was in the ‘Innovation’ category of ENCAMS’ Cleaner, Safer, Greener Network awards and the council saw off stiff competition from two other councils, Enfield and Southwark, to win it. The award was collected at a ceremony in Sheffield City Hall by Pete Strange, Project Manager of Camden Council’s Boulevard Project which led the anti-flyposting campaign.

Camden Council began using Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) to combat illegal flyposting in the summer of 2004. Since then flyposting has almost been eradicated in the borough. Flyposting previously cost the council £250,000 a year to combat, so this was a significant saving and also released valuable resources and personnel to be employed elsewhere.

Following Camden Council’s initial ASBO action in the summer of 2004, Sony Music Entertainment Ltd gave an undertaking never to flypost in England and Wales again. In March 2005 the council served an ASBO against Diabolical Liberties, a company that actually undertook the flyposting activity, preventing them from flyposting in Camden for the next two years.

Councillor John Thane, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said:

“This ENCAMS award is a marvellous result for Camden Council and is also very timely, as we approach the first anniversary of the ASBO being served on Diabolical Liberties. Many people played a key part in helping to bring this achievement about, above all the residents, businesses and visitors to the borough whose distaste for flyposting encouraged us to take the action in the first place.”
