CAMDEN COUNCIL DISAPPOINTED AT HOUSING PILOT DECISION

(28 June 06)

Camden Council today expressed disappointment that it has not been chosen to pilot new financial arrangements to increase investment in its housing stock. However the council said it would continue to look for new ways to find the investment it needed to bring its housing stock up to the decent homes standard.

The council had earlier written to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Ruth Kelly MP, asking to be included in the pilot schemes she announced on 7 June. In her announcement she said she wanted to work with the best performing councils to pilot new ways to increase investment in social housing. Camden Council is still hopeful to discuss its options with the Secretary of State.

Cllr Chris Naylor, Camden Council's Executive Member for Housing, said: "I can assure you that we will continue to do whatever we can to ensure we give all our council tenants decent homes. It is disappointing not be included in this pilot and I now to want speak with ministers about the options for Camden.

“We will keep a close eye on the pilots to see if the proposals could work to increase investment. If we are sure that this approach will work for our tenants, we will push for the scheme to be opened up as widely as possible."
