Bupa Cromwell Hospital introduces UK's first 'virtual theatre' MRI

Bupa Cromwell Hospital has installed the UK's first 'virtual theatre' MRI scanner, it was announced today.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that is often used to diagnose health conditions affecting organs, bones and tissue.

However, MRI scans can be both frightening and disorientating, particularly due to the noise and claustrophobic nature of the equipment. The new Ingenia 1.5T MRI Scanner at Bupa Cromwell Hospital has been specially designed to create a calming atmosphere.

Ambient lighting is used to transform the scanning room into a multi-dimensional theatre, where music plays and images and light are projected onto the scanner's circular walls. Patients can choose the music, colours and images they prefer. The scanner reduces scan times by up to 30 percent and because patients pass through a larger space than used in a traditional MRI, the experience is less claustrophobic.
