Bryson backs coalition against litter

16 December 2010

Bill Bryson, President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), gave his backing today to a new Government-led campaign against litter, ‘Love where you live’. The importance of the campaign was highlighted by new figures showing that there has been no improvement in reducing litter in the last year despite a 10 per cent increase in the cost of clearing it up - now £858 million a year. Of particular concern was the repeated rise in drinks-related litter, which grew by a further 2 per cent on the previous year.

Bill Bryson, CPRE President, said: “It’s mixed news today for those who hate to see litter despoil the English countryside. The Government and key players have come together to tackle the problem head on - which is a victory for our ‘Stop the Drop’ campaign. CPRE has long maintained that co-ordinated action is the only way to make a significant dent in the problem and it’s great to have this acknowledged by the Government.

“However, we’ve also been given an idea of the scale of the problem we need to overcome. Littering levels are not improving - with drinks-related waste one of the key offenders. Government and Industry working together is important but the Government must not let industry call all the shots. For example, solutions like a bottle deposit scheme may not be popular with some retailers and producers, but our research, international experience, and public opinion show it would be an effective tool in the fight against litter.”

The campaign launch took place in Westminster at the first ever National Litter Convention. The convention was attended by an influential cross-section of interests from industry, manufacturing, retailers, land managers and local government.
