BRC NAME WEEE SCHEME OPERATOR

31 August 2005

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has today announced that Valpak is the company selected to run the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Retail Compliance Scheme for the BRC.

The Retail Compliance Scheme was created by the BRC as a more practical alternative to retailers having to set up free in store take back of WEEE to meet the obligations of the WEEE Directive. Instead, retailers can now put money into a central pot, which will be used to upgrade civic amenity sites so they are better prepared to accept WEEE and can become a designated collection point. The scheme was given the green light by the Government in May 2005.

Valpak will be responsible for creating an adequate WEEE collection network by recruiting Local Authority Civic Amenity Sites. This will need to be in place at the earliest opportunity to ensure compliance with the WEEE Directive ahead of the June 2006 implementation date. They will also recruit retail members to the scheme, which will encompass large retailers and a significant number of smaller businesses. The BRC has already identified over 4,000 obligated businesses.

BRC Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, commented: “The responses to our tender were of extremely high standard but Valpak’s experience in the field of producer responsibility was a significant contributing factor in making this decision. We now look forward to working with Valpak in order to deliver WEEE compliance for retailers.”

82% of local amenity sites have already expressed an interest in upgrading and numbers will be confirmed over the coming months.
