BRC MEETS WITH TIBET GOVERNMENT ON BRC GLOBAL FOOD STANDARDS

20 December 2005

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) met with officials from the Tibetan Municipality Government for the first time last week to discuss the use of the BRC's ground-breaking Global Food Standard, in Tibet.

The BRC Global Standard – Food is used extensively by UK retailers and manufacturers as the basis for their supplier’s food safety management systems. Certification Bodies operating throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Far East, Australasia, North and South America currently use BRC Global Standards, but they are not yet used in Tibet.

BRC Head of Technical Services, Kevin Swoffer, who met with the President of the Tibet Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (Mr Ma Xiangcun), the Deputy Secretary of the Municipality Government (Mr Ma Guochao) and other government officials, commented:

"We were very pleased to discuss the potential use of the BRC Food Standard in Tibet. Meeting the requirements of this Standard ensures due diligence systems are in place and enables retailers to procure products with confidence, knowing that all areas of product safety and legality are covered.

“The delegation expressed interest in the use of self-regulatory standards and it was agreed to keep the Tibetan Government informed of this and any future initiatives instigated by the British retail industry. There was a particular interest in food safety standards for SMEs and we will continue to keep in close contact with the delegation over the coming months.”
