BRC BACKS REUSABLE BAG CAMPAIGN

14 September 2005

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is putting its weight behind ‘The Reusable Bag Campaign’, launched today by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme).

The Campaign, which encourages people to reuse durable bags for their shopping trips, will see two pilot schemes run in Bristol and Edinburgh, beginning on 19 September. It will run for six weeks and is supported by a number of high street retailers including ASDA, Boots, Co-Op/Scotmid, Somerfield, Tesco and Waitrose.

BRC, Director General, Kevin Hawkins says: “We welcome the pilot scheme organised by WRAP as an innovative way of encouraging consumers to make a conscious effort to reduce the number of plastic bags currently in circulation.

“This is an opportunity for consumers to make a positive impact on the environment by thinking globally, but acting locally.”
