BECKFORD PRIMARY POWER SAVERS PRAISE

17/10/06

Children from Beckford Primary, NW6, were blown away with a special prize from Camden Council for their Power Rangers energy saving initiative.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, presented the school with a demonstration wind turbine, solar powered water heater and a solar panel, today, Tuesday 17 October. The energy saving devices teach pupils how wind and light can generate power for lights, buzzers and a motor.

Pupils created the Power Rangers scheme to save energy at the school. At least one child from each class scours the school daily for wasted energy - such as running taps and lights left on.

The scheme was entered into the Mayor of London’s London School Environment Awards, which was won by Gospel Oak Primary with Edith Neville coming in a close second in May 2006. The schools received £2000 and £1000 respectively.

Although not in the top two, the council decided Beckford primary pupils also deserved recognition for their fun and creative idea and hard work saving energy.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment said:

“There’s so many things we can all do to save energy and Beckford’s Power Rangers show that, with a bit of fun and imagination, school children can lead the way in setting an example for others. Camden Council is keen to promote energy awareness through a range of grants, advice, help and information. We urge the borough’s residents to help us make Camden as energy efficient as possible.”
