‘BE MERRY BE SAFE’

15 December 2006

Christmas and New Year revellers are being encouraged to drink sensibly during the festive holidays to reduce alcohol related violence and anti-social behaviour.

Camden Community Safety Partnership’s drinking awareness campaign provides helpful tips and messages on how to drink safely including making sure you eat before drinking alcohol.

The campaign includes a series of posters, publicity events and free health advice. It will be supported by increased police presence over Christmas and New Year along with increased police visits to licensed premises every weekend in December.

The campaign’s message is 'enjoy alcohol over Christmas and New Year but drink sensibly and think about your health'.

Cllr Ben Rawlings, Camden Council’s Community Safety Executive Member, said:

“The campaign aims to give realistic, practical and sensible advice. We’re not saying, and don’t expect people, not to go out and have a drink over the festive period but want to offer people advice on how to act responsibly to ensure the safety of themselves and others.”

Tips and messages include:

Keep track of how much you are drinking
Alternate between alcoholic and soft drinks
Try lower strength beers and wines
Plan your journey home
Look after your valuables

Camden Council and the police will be visiting pubs and clubs in the borough and distributing promotional material to licensees and customers to promote sensible drinking.

Sgt Bob Dear, lead officer of Camden Police's Licensing Unit, said:

"This is about people enjoying themselves sensibly and safely with some useful reminders. We want people to enjoy the celebrations of Christmas and the New Year, but at the same time, to remain alert and to take care during the festivities."

A spokesman for Camden Primary Care Trust said:

"In the run up to Christmas, Camden Primary Care Trust will work with local pharmacies, GPs and community groups to present information on how much alcohol is too much and encourage people to think carefully about both the amount of alcohol they consume and how often they drink. For those who are drinking over the recommended limits leaflets will be available, providing information on the health consequences of drinking too much and guidance on how to cut back. The key message of the campaign is ‘drink sensibly’."
